Where did AKAawesome.com come from?
The name is Asim Khalid, and when I introduced myself to my first boss she thought it was cool that my name sounds like the word "Awesome"...so that's what she put on my name tag.  Ever since then I came up with my screen name, now my website, and eventually AKAawesome.com apparel...only kidding.

What's the point of the webpage?
It's interesting, I took on this project to start collecting, sharing, and storing some of my favorite memories and things that I enjoy with my friends and family.  Now it's not just about me...it's about the Khandaan Baby!  Attention Family and friends....send in anything you think should be included on the website, and I'll be sure to get them up inshallah.  If I post up something that I shouldn't have, just lemme know and it's gone!  But don't tell me that the picture didn't capture your best side, cause then you're SOL!  I know I don't have as much time as I used to, so please be patient and I'll update just as soon as I can.

The 100 faces of Asim!

About me
Who am I?  Some of you know me as Syed, whereas others know me as Asim.  I think a person’s environment is a nice place to start when trying to learn about who that person is.  My friend’s dad always said that if you hang around crap you’re bound to smell like it…thus I have been selective with the people I consider my near and dear friends.  I am blessed with an amazing family that values strong Islamic ideals, and still knows how to have fun and live life to the fullest!  I am a mix of these people and have learned a lot from professors, colleagues at work, and the people I have meet here and there throughout the different phases of my life.

I welcome a difference of opinion and cannot stand to take things simply as they are.  I think it’s important to question our existence, why we are here, and what we are doing in this world?  The answers are not in clear black and white, but I truly believe that we will find the answers to our questions either before we die or on the day of judgment.  When we stop questioning things we will lose our intellectual stimulation to continue our existence and life will not be worth living.  Intelligence is underrated and superficiality is at an all-time high. Hope we can rise above these tough times and let the truth of our deen take us to the next level.

I was born in Chicago, IL, however I am part Arab (my grandmother was born in Saudi),  from Hyderabad India (a Hydrogoodie), and have taken enough Spanish in college to make me part Chicano!  Ethnic Diversity has been a theme throughout my life and being able to continue to learn about other people’s cultures continues to amaze me.  Recognizing where I came from as well as being aware of what my forefathers struggled for is important to me.  As much as I value my cultural ties, it's better not to think of others as any better or less.  I feel that our Indo-Muslim community praises diversity and would like to appeal to anyone and everyone, but unfortunately so many of us stick to our own ethnic circles.  I don't believe our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon him) would approve of this type of an attitude...I believe in doing things in moderation and making an effort to improve the lives of those around us.

Life at the University of Michigan-Dearborn was great, but it would have been easier if I didn’t have to work…but hey, life is not supposed to be easy…is it?  I don’t think I’d trade what I went through for anything…and I truly believe my entrepreunal experience along with my degree in Finance (of all things) are eventually going to come in handy after I get out of Dental School...University of Detroit Mercy Class of 2008 Rocks!  The other day someone asked me how a finance major becomes a dentist?  It was like interviewing at D-schools all over again!  I told him that my decision was one based on research and exploration.  I learned about the profession by reading, spending time watching somebody work, and finding out what it takes.  I realized that it’s a unique profession where you get to be so many different people at once; doctor, artist, engineer, psychiatrist, businessmen, and you have a significant impact on the surrounding community!  So why the heck not?  If you're thinking about it, drop me a line and I'd be happy to provide you with any info you might need.

Most of my time goes towards school, but when I do have time you'll find me at the gym, movies, or out and about.  I'm into different types of music, movies, and cultures.  If I had more time I'd spend it catching up on reading, updating this website, and playing my guitar.  I’m a big sports fan…Go Pistons, Tigers, Red Wings, and Lions!  and yes…I am a Homer (support the home team no matter how good or bad they are).
